About Our Horses
At Vonfidel Ranch, every riding experience begins with the horse. Welfare, trust, temperament, and long-term soundness govern every decision we make, from training and rider matching to workload and daily care.
Everything we do — every ride, every guideline, every moment of quiet — begins with the horse’s mind, not the rider’s expectation. This philosophy shapes how we train, how we ride, and how we decide what not to offer. It is the foundation on which the ranch stands.
The Vonfidel Standard
A horse that trusts you will carry you farther, softer, and more honestly than any technique can manufacture. We do not rush, force, or perform for effect. We avoid harsh tack, artificial shortcuts, and speed for its own sake. Our work is grounded in presence, consistency, respect, relationship, and time — because true horsemanship cannot be hurried.
How We Train
Training at Vonfidel Ranch is a quiet, daily discipline. Each horse is understood individually — temperament, history, comfort, and limits. Groundwork forms the core of our approach, with soft cues and unforced progression. Riding sessions remain short, intentional, and respectful of the horse’s emotional bandwidth.
The Horses of Vonfidel Ranch
Trail Horses
Calm, conditioned horses selected for confidence, steadiness, terrain awareness, and suitability for guided riding in open country.
Developing Horses
Horses brought along gradually through groundwork, exposure, calm handling, and patient conditioning before being considered for more demanding work.
Sensitive Horses
Light, responsive horses that require thoughtful riders, quiet hands, and clear communication rather than force or over-correction.
Forward Horses
Balanced, willing horses with natural energy, used only where rider ability, terrain, weather, and workload conditions are appropriate.
Young Horses in Training
Young horses are developed slowly, with emphasis on trust, exposure, confidence, soundness, and long-term usefulness rather than fast results.
Welfare Before Riding
Horse welfare governs every riding decision at Vonfidel Ranch. Workload, rider suitability, environmental conditions, footing, heat, hydration, recovery, and rotation schedules are assessed continuously. Riding proceeds only when conditions support the physical and emotional wellbeing of the horse.
Why This Matters
When horses are calm, respected, and understood, riding becomes safer, quieter, and more connected — for horse and rider alike.
