The Vonfidel Doctrine of Ethical Equestrian Tourism
A public articulation of the principles, boundaries, and long-term view that govern every riding experience at Vonfidel Ranch, a single, place-bound ranch in Sri Lanka.
Trust must never be extracted from an animal for human entertainment. It must be earned, protected, and preserved.
Vonfidel Ranch exists to correct a quiet failure in the global equestrian tourism industry: the normalization of stress, spectacle, and mechanical riding at the expense of animal welfare, human psychology, and truth.
We do not operate as a trust-based riding institution. Every decision we make – from guest selection to horse rotation, from handler conduct to terrain exposure – is governed by the principle above.
What We Stand For
- Trust Over Control. True horsemanship begins where force ends.
- Welfare Before Experience. Welfare is not an accessory to our model – it is the model.
- Selectivity as a Welfare Tool. Rejection is protection.
- Silence as a Luxury. Stillness is part of the experience.
- Animals Are Partners, Not Assets. Horses are collaborators, not capacity units.
- Calm Authority as the Highest Skill. Composure under pressure is our standard.
What We Reject
- Mass tourism.
- Discounted animal labour.
- Gimmick-based equestrianism.
- Influencer-led branding.
- Mechanical instruction.
- Profit from stress.
Selectivity & Volume
We remain intentionally ultra-small. Fewer riders. Better horses. Higher standards.
Training & Legacy
External operators may be trained only as certified custodians of the doctrine, should this standard ever be shared beyond this ranch. The Vonfidel name is never licensed casually.
Global Expansion
If the doctrine is ever applied outside Sri Lanka, new locations begin as silent laboratories. Visibility follows proof.
Our Long View
We are not building a tourism business. We are building an ethical institution.
For how this doctrine is lived day to day, see The Vonfidel Way and Who We Are.
